Day 16: Munich

Today we spent the entire day in Munich just experiencing the city and shopping. We began the day with a tour and our tour guide was hilarious, he was actually from Dallas, Texas and has lived in Germany for about 8 years now working as an English tour guide. He was definitely the whole group's favorite guide so far because he was cracking jokes and made the tour really entertaining and fun for everyone.
He actually took us to the main market in Munich (which several of us went back to later on to get pretzels and strudel, which was amazing).

We also learned about beer gardens where they used to store beer underground and above ground planted trees so that the ground would stay cool and he beer wouldn't go bad during the summer months. Now beer gardens are just areas with picnic tables and trees where you can eat food and get a beer to share with family and friends, which is really cool. Unfortunately it was raining today so we weren't able to really take part in the beer garden tradition because it was cold and wet, but it was cool to learn about!
After to tour I actually got the chance to try on an authentic dress (I can't remember what it is called) that a lot of people in the area still wear today and it looked really cute!

I actually wanted to buy it, but it was a little expensive and I want to save my money for other places.
I tried some German hot chocolate today which was also really good, it was super rich and you could really taste the chocolate.

I also learned the original slogan for the HofbrÀuhaus today which was; "poor people eat their wheat, rich people drink it." And I think that was very clever.  I actually found a beer that I liked when we went to the Hofbrauhaus today, but the service there is awful and nobody ever brought me the beer so that was awkward (luckily I wasn't charged for it).
I did try horse meat today as well as strudel and the horse meat wasn't bad. It honestly tasted like beef to me and the strudel was AMAZING!
In a random souvenir shop I actually ran into a guy from Utah which was kinda funny and one of those small world moments.
We did get to see the famous glockenspiel in the main square today as well which was super cool! We hit it at just the rift time and got to see it move as well!

After a long day of wandering around a few of us decided to take the metro to the Olympic Stadium from the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich and it was so cool!

My favorite part was the pool and I was so excited when we found out we could go in!

We also went to where the track and main stadium were, but the track is no longer there because the area is used for concerts and such now.

After we went to the Olympic Village, which is now part apartments and last dorms for students.

It's cool because in the area where I took the last picture there are a lot of plaques that list the names (in alphabetical order) of all of the athletes that participated in the games that summer from all over the world.

Tomorrow we are heading to Prague for 3 nights, which is super exciting. We are almost half way through the trip already and the time is flying by!
